Cartiere Carrara presents 2025 Sustainability Report and advances decarbonisation plan

Cartiere Carrara presented its 2025 Sustainability Report at the auditorium of the Florence Chamber of Commerce on 30 September 2026. The document sets out the Group’s results, investments and commitments across environmental, social and governance matters.
Preparing a decarbonisation plan
Among the main developments was the launch of preparatory work to define a Decarbonisation Plan, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. The plan will identify actions to progressively reduce emissions, establish targets and pathways for achieving them, and define strategies for monitoring progress over time. This work complements measures already undertaken by the Group in energy efficiency, renewable energy generation for its own use and monitoring environmental impacts.
For 2025, Cartiere Carrara again chose to report its ESG performance voluntarily in accordance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), despite not being subject to the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The Group also updated its 2025–2027 Sustainability Plan, confirming its areas of focus: people, communities, the value chain, water, energy, circularity, biodiversity, afforestation and transparency.
Industrial scale and commitments
The report describes a Group comprising eight companies and eight production sites in Italy, with annual tissue paper production capacity of approximately 300,000 tonnes and products distributed in more than 50 countries. Turnover remained just below €500 million, with €443 million in economic value generated, while the workforce approached 1,000 people.
“Presenting our Sustainability Report means measuring the progress we are making and being transparent not only about the results achieved, but also about the areas where we still need to work,” said Mario Carrara, Vice President of Cartiere Carrara. “In a scenario shaped by energy costs, increasing international competition and an evolving European regulatory framework, continuing to invest and innovate means building an industrial model capable of combining competitiveness and sustainability.”
The presentation also provided an opportunity to examine some of the major challenges facing European industry. Following the introduction by Mario Carrara, speakers included Leonardo Boni of the School of Management at Politecnico di Milano; Giovanni Ferrara, Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Florence; and Antonio Palmieri, Co-founder and President of Fondazione Pensiero Solido. Representing the company were CEO Gaetano Ievolella and Quality and Sustainability Director Cristiano Dutto. Discussions focused on the evolution of European sustainability regulation, the energy challenge and artificial intelligence.
International development
The sustainability programme accompanies a period of substantial industrial and international development for the Group. Alongside investments in Italy, this includes the acquisition of a paper mill in the United Kingdom, where production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2027, and the opening of a new logistics hub in Spain, in addition to platforms already operating in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The Group is also considering further development opportunities in European markets, with particular attention to France and Spain.
This strategy connects growth, competitiveness and sustainability, with the aim of strengthening Cartiere Carrara’s international presence while maintaining its industrial roots in Italy.
