San Martino Papermill launches the first phase of PM2 control and automation rebuild with SAEL

San Martino Papermill has initiated the first phase of the rebuild of the control and automation system of paper machine PM2. The collaboration with SAEL continues, following the assignment of the complete modernization of the control, monitoring, drives, and automation systems as part of a major investment plan for the mill’s technological upgrade.
The turnkey project included the conversion of PM2 from a single-shaft to a sectional drive system, the installation of new motors, and the expansion of the existing DCS to fully integrate and optimize the entire production line. The first start-up phase was successfully completed in May 2025, while the project is scheduled for completion by year-end, with the objective of achieving significant improvements in efficiency, energy savings, and product quality.

The upgrade also includes a new Medium Voltage substation, electrical switchgear, and the revamping of the steam and hood systems, all due to be finalized by the end of the year. Key synergies have been established with long-time partner SIMI&C for electrical connections, and with De Juliis – main contractor – for mechanical works and safety compliance.
The initial results confirm higher runnability and a more stable, user-friendly plant operation, also thanks to full integration with the company’s ERP system. “The quality of the project, SAEL’s technical expertise, and their continuous support make this partnership a benchmark for the future technological development of our paper mill,” stated the technical management of San Martino Papermill.
