Valmet to supply complete board making line to Sun Paper in China

Valmet will deliver a complete board making line, automation systems and lifecycle support to Sun Paper’s mill in Nanning, China. The investment is intended to increase the mill’s containerboard capacity while ensuring reliable, energy- and resource-efficient production. Start-up of the new line is scheduled for autumn 2027.
“The high-capacity machine concept and the selected advanced technologies support our targets for energy-efficient and stable production. We expect these solutions to deliver strong performance while reducing energy consumption and ensuring our capacity goals. We value the long-standing relationship we have built with Valmet and look forward to continuing our cooperation with this new project,” said Ying Guangdong, Vice General Manager and Chief Engineer of Sun Paper.
The new line will support high-capacity production of kraft and testliner grades. Valmet’s scope covers the complete board machine, from the headboxes to the winders, together with technologies designed to improve dewatering, drying efficiency, runnability and final roll quality.
“The machine, including the transformative Sleeve roll technology and compact dryer geometry, provides an excellent foundation for optimized and energy-efficient containerboard production. We are pleased to continue supporting Sun Paper with this unique board machine project with lifecycle services,” said Pekka Tolvanen, Sales Manager, Packaging and Paper Business Area at Valmet.
Among the technologies included in the project is Valmet’s Sleeve roll solution for the forming section. The system uses forming fabric compression to improve water removal while supporting efficient energy use and consistent board quality.
The dryer section will feature a compact geometry designed to provide efficient drying together with advanced runnability systems. According to Valmet, this configuration will support high machine performance while helping the customer meet its production and energy-efficiency targets.
Two winders will be installed to support the line’s capacity and reliability requirements and ensure consistent roll quality.
Automation and lifecycle support
The order also includes an extensive lifecycle support package intended to establish stable production conditions and maintain the long-term performance of the board machine.
The services will include spare parts, digital solutions and paper machine clothing. Valmet will also carry out improvements to other machinery already operating at the customer’s site.
A comprehensive automation package will support production efficiency, operational safety and process reliability. The systems will also establish a foundation for the Nanning mill’s gradual transition towards higher levels of autonomous operation.
