Valmet launches 3D Fiber technology for advanced molded fiber packaging
Valmet has expanded its offering for the rapidly growing molded fiber packaging market with the launch of Valmet 3D Fiber, a new technology designed for the high-capacity production of three-dimensional fiber-based packaging products. The solution is aimed at helping packaging producers meet increasing demand for sustainable alternatives to plastic by providing a complete end-to-end production concept for molded fiber packaging.
The new technology combines advanced fiber-forming capabilities, automation and process expertise to enable the efficient production of lightweight yet rigid packaging applications made from cellulose fibers.

Valmet stated that the technology offers broader market opportunities than conventional wet molded fiber processes. It enables the production of a wide range of packaging products, including trays, plates and food packaging applications, while maintaining high production efficiency and product quality. A key feature of the process is its ability to recycle trim waste and process side streams back into production, supporting resource efficiency and circular economy principles.

The launch forms part of Valmet’s broader strategy to support the transition toward renewable and recyclable packaging materials through innovation and advanced manufacturing technologies.
The development of Valmet 3D Fiber is the result of a long-term collaboration with Metsä Spring, the innovation company of Metsä Group. Since 2020, the two companies have worked together to develop a production concept capable of converting wood-based fibres into sustainable packaging solutions designed to replace plastic in a variety of applications.
Valmet believes the new technology will help packaging producers strengthen their market position while accelerating the adoption of fiber-based packaging across consumer and food-service markets.
