Valmet to upgrade recovery boiler at Stora Enso’s Varkaus mill
Valmet will deliver a recovery boiler modification to Stora Enso’s Varkaus mill in Finland, including the installation of a new secondary superheater. The two companies have also signed a three-year cooperation agreement covering process monitoring and operator training, with the aim of supporting continuous performance improvements at the site. The Varkaus mill has an annual production capacity of 420,000 tonnes of containerboard and 335,000 tonnes of pulp. The investment is expected to improve the reliability of the mill’s operations while reducing maintenance costs.

Valmet’s scope of supply includes the replacement of the recovery boiler’s secondary superheater with a Valmet tubular superheater and modifications to the existing superheater arrangement. As part of the three-year cooperation agreement, Valmet will also provide process monitoring services, remote support and operator training. Although the new superheater will be installed in 2027, Valmet will already provide maintenance services during the recovery boiler’s annual shutdown in 2026. The delivery and installation of the new equipment are scheduled for September 2027.
