SAEL: Innovation, efficiency, and energy savings at Giacosa paper mill in Italy

Giacosa paper mill in Italy has chosen to invest in the future by adopting SAEL’s most advanced technology for its new sectional drive for PM1. Thanks to the use of liquid-cooled inverters, the company takes another significant step forward in energy efficiency and innovation, further strengthening its successful partnership with SAEL.
Following the extraordinary success achieved three years ago with the modernization of the sectional drive of PM2 – which was started up in August 2021 along with the DCS for steam, hood, and approach – Marco Roscio, CEO of Giacosa papermill, had no doubts: SAEL’s technology was the natural choice to meet the new challenge of automation and drive with a strong focus on energy savings.
The benefits are both clear and groundbreaking. A dramatic reduction in the size of electrical panels, without sacrificing installed power, combined with superior efficiency that ensures exceptional longevity for internal components. This optimization allows the papermill to make the most of its limited space by installing electrical panels close to the machine, eliminating the need for air-conditioned rooms, and placing them in previously unfeasible locations.
Key Advantage
A significant reduction in wiring costs, the ability to position panels in areas that were previously inaccessible, and substantial energy savings generated by the liquid-cooling system.
The system, with an installed power of approximately 1 MW, has been designed with scalability in mind. It includes the drive system for the paper machine, steam pumps, hood, and more, and is ready for future expansions. Giacosa is looking toward the future with an ambitious investment plan, and the system is fully prepared to support all upcoming developments.

The startup of this new chapter is set for August 2025, thanks to meticulous and passionate internal planning. Giacosa paper mill is not merely upgrading its system; it is shaping the future step by step with innovation, vision, and an unwavering commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.
