Papiro Sarda made its significant PM1 modification by entrusting SAEL

The Big Investment at Papiro Sarda Paper Mill has been started up. It involves the expansion of the new sectional drive, as much as the Steam-Hoods-Vacuum new control panels; the Dryers section rebuilding; a new Speed size unit supply; implementation of automatic hydraulic lubrication, pulp treatment plant upgrade, and thickness control system upgrade. Everything supervised and managed by the redundant PM1 machine DCS.

Papiro Sarda made its significant PM1 modification by entrusting SAEL, its longstanding partner, with the supply and commissioning of automation and drives. This involves the extension of the sectional control, previously designed and commissioned over 8 years ago, onto which new controls for newly installed components (Pope and Speed Size) have been added.

Q&A: To extend an existing system? SAEL ensures and does it, even for plants with over 40 years of operation: same hardware, same architecture, same drives, same spare parts… This is the SAEL’s PLUS.

The modification, required for the complete restructuring of Steam and Hoods, also encompassed all upgrades related to the sectional control, where the dryers were converted to Silent Drive. The previously implemented ‘DCS in Drive’ system, initially managed by the drives of PM1 only – already structured to accommodate new implementations (full tags Scalink system) -, was expanded to integrate the new additions. It includes now, the management of steam-hoods (the purpose of the massive modification); management of the dryers realized in Silent Drive; management of the new Speed Size with all its operational logic; and finally, all the new logics related to the new Pope.

Within few weeks of commissioning, a 15% increase in continuous machine speed (the reason for the modification) was confirmed, along with its consequent energy consumption savings. The paper mill continues its strategy of plant renewal, in line with its efforts over the years.
