India Government orders closures of 150 industrial units for polluting Ganga river, includes pulp and paper mills

Taking stringent action against industrial units polluting river Ganga, the government today said closure orders have been issued to 150 such units for not responding to its order of installing Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring System (OCEMS). Addressing a press conference here, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said, “As many as 150 industrial units that have not responded to the government’s order of installing OCEMS have been issued closure orders, yesterday. Six units are under examination.” He said there are 764 Grossly Polluting Industries (GPI) along the Ganga. However, there has been a substantial progress in installation of OCEMS.
