Mondi customers experience high-performance kraft paper firsthand at new paper machine in Štětí mill

Mondi welcomed customers and partners from around the world to celebrate the inauguration of its state-of-the-art paper machine at the Štětí mill in the Czech Republic. The machine, which started up successfully in December 2024, was designed to meet the growing demand for paper-based flexible packaging driven by e-commerce expansion and increasing attention to sustainability. With an annual capacity of around 210,000 tonnes, it produces a broad portfolio of high-strength and high-porosity kraft papers for industrial, construction and e-commerce applications. This development further reinforces Mondi’s commitment to providing packaging and paper solutions that are sustainable by design.

The new machine is part of a wider €400 million investment programme at the mill, aimed at strengthening Mondi’s ability to ensure a reliable supply of kraft paper and support customers in their transition to recyclable, renewable paper-based materials. The project also allows the company to streamline production across its broader kraft paper portfolio and offer a complete range of high-quality speciality kraft papers, including functional barrier grades.

The inauguration, held earlier this month, highlighted Mondi’s focus on long-term partnerships, circularity and sustainable growth. More than 130 guests attended the event, taking the opportunity to see the new machine in operation.

During the ceremony, Andrew King, Mondi Group CEO, stated: “This is more than a paper machine, it is a symbol of what we can achieve when innovation, sustainability and teamwork come together. It enables us to continue delivering great service to our customers and the high-quality packaging materials they want to help them achieve their sustainability goals.”

Miroslav Zitka, Managing Director of the Štětí mill, and Vladimir Krajci, Project Director Mondi Kraft Paper, provided an overview of the project’s development from the initial design phase through to start-up, emphasising the teamwork, focus on safety and dedication that contributed to completing the installation on schedule and within budget.

The programme also included a panel discussion with customers, equipment producers and industry specialists exploring trends in the packaging sector, sustainability challenges and the need for strong collaboration throughout the value chain. The event concluded with guided tours of the new machine, followed by networking moments and celebrations, marking an important milestone for Mondi and its partners.
