Smurfit Westrock to permanently shut one paper machine at La Tuque mill

Smurfit Westrock announced the permanent closure of one paper machine at its La Tuque mill in Québec, Canada. The machine has an annual production capacity of 127,000 tons of solid bleached sulfate (SBS) and has faced ongoing scale and cost challenges.

The move was described as part of the company’s efforts to strengthen its SBS portfolio and support the long-term competitiveness of its paperboard operations.

In addition, Smurfit Westrock said it will close its extrusion facility in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Québec, which converts grades produced on the La Tuque machine. The closures are expected to lead to a limited workforce reduction of approximately 30 roles at La Tuque and around 60 roles at Pointe-aux-Trembles.

The company stated that support measures will be provided to affected employees, including career transition assistance and, where possible, relocation opportunities. Impacted employees will receive local severance in accordance with company policy and labour union agreements.
