Mondi opens new paper bags plant in Pittsburgh to support growing eCommerce demand

Mondi has officially opened a new state-of-the-art paper bags production facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, strengthening its manufacturing footprint in the United States and supporting growing demand across eCommerce and industrial markets.

The new plant consolidates production previously carried out at Mondi’s sites in Wellsburg (West Virginia) and Oakdale (Pennsylvania), while introducing advanced automation and modern production technologies to improve efficiency, quality and customer service. The facility produces a wide range of paper bags for applications including eCommerce, food, animal feed, building materials and chemicals.

With a strong focus on the fast-growing eCommerce segment, the plant is equipped with highly automated production lines and advanced printing capabilities. These are designed to meet key customer requirements such as scalable volumes, short lead times and consistent performance. Once fully ramped up, the site is expected to reach an annual capacity of around 300 million paper bags.

“The opening of our new Pittsburgh plant marks an important milestone for our paper bags business in North America,” said Rory Taylor, President Paper Bags Americas at Mondi. “By bringing production together in a modern facility, we are strengthening our ability to support customers with reliable, high-quality paper bag solutions while responding more effectively to evolving market needs.”

Highlighting the importance of eCommerce, Nedim Nisic, VP General Manager eCommerce at Mondi, added: “Demand in eCommerce is increasingly shaped by high-volume, fast-moving applications that require flexibility, short lead times and consistent performance. This new plant allows us to better align our sustainable paper-based portfolio with these requirements.”

The Pittsburgh facility is expected to employ approximately 170 people by the end of the year, covering operational, technical and customer-facing roles. Strategically located in Pennsylvania, the site benefits from strong infrastructure and proximity to key customers and logistics networks, supporting efficient service and fast response times.
