Idesam launches global bioinnovation challenge focused on Amazon biodiversity

The Institute for Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Amazon (Idesam) has launched an international innovation challenge aimed at transforming Amazon biodiversity research into sustainable products and impact-driven businesses. The Amazon Bioinnovation Challenge is open for applications until 30 June 2026 and targets research and development specialists with international experience in sectors including cosmetics, food and bio-based materials. According to Idesam, the initiative is one of the largest bioeconomy innovation programmes focused on the Amazon region.
Connecting science and traditional knowledge
The programme seeks to combine scientific expertise with local and traditional knowledge to develop commercially viable solutions that also support rainforest conservation and local communities.
“The challenge is about turning science into real-world solutions that keep the forest standing while creating sustainable economic opportunities,” said Paulo Simonetti, Leader in Open Innovation and ESG at Idesam. The initiative includes six main focus areas, including the development of biomaterials derived from native rubber, the use of açaí byproducts, and innovation involving Amazonian oils such as andiroba, copaíba and buriti.
Idesam will initially select 25 R&D specialists and 25 innovators. Ten teams will then advance to a 15-day in-person residency programme in the Amazon region, including activities in Manaus and surrounding communities. All participation costs for the residency programme will be covered by the organisers.
Selected R&D specialists will be eligible for monthly grants ranging from USD 650 to USD 1,300 over six months. The programme also includes access to laboratory infrastructure, mentoring activities and approximately USD 20,000 per team for testing and validation activities.
Awards for winning projects
At the end of the programme, three winning teams will receive financial awards ranging from USD 20,000 to USD 40,000. The selected teams will also receive ongoing support for business development, including legal assistance and access to market and investment networks. The initiative is funded by the Bezos Earth Fund and supported by organisations including Penn State University.
Idesam highlighted that the Amazon rainforest represents one of the world’s richest biodiversity regions and plays a strategic role in the development of sustainable bioeconomy solutions. The programme aims to accelerate innovations capable of combining environmental conservation with economic growth opportunities for local communities and global markets.
