DS Smith to close Launceston corrugated packaging plant with 165 job losses

DS Smith has confirmed the closure of its corrugated packaging plant in Launceston, Cornwall, UK, a decision that will result in the loss of 165 jobs. The company began consulting with employees and employee representatives earlier in 2026 over the future of the facility, which has been an important employer in the Launceston area for nearly 60 years.

Following the conclusion of the consultation process and an assessment of the alternative proposals submitted, DS Smith confirmed that the plant will close and that production at the site will end in November 2026.

A DS Smith spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the consultation with employees and employee representatives at Launceston has concluded and, after careful consideration of counter proposals raised, the business has made the difficult decision to confirm the proposed closure of the site with the loss of 165 jobs. Production at the site will finish in November 2026.”

The Launceston facility, located in Cornwall in south-west England, produces corrugated packaging and has operated in the town for more than five decades. The site processes approximately 28,000 tonnes of paper per year and has developed a range of corrugated packaging solutions for different industrial sectors.

The plant is also known for the manufacture of specialist packaging products, including insulated and water-resistant trays used for the transport of fresh and chilled fish.

The proposed closure had already generated concern among employees, their families and the local community. Workers and family members protested against the plans in June, warning that the closure could have a significant impact on Launceston and on other local businesses connected to the facility.

Hayley Sanders, whose relatives work at the plant, said at the time that the aim of the protest was “to raise awareness of how important the site is to the town and community” and of “the effect that it could have on families in the future”. The company acknowledged the consequences of the decision for employees and the wider local community and said that support would be provided to those affected during the closure process.

A DS Smith spokesperson added: “We recognise that this decision is disappointing for those impacted. We are fully committed to supporting all our employees throughout this period, recognising the impact the change will have on them, their families, and the wider community.”

DS Smith has operated in Launceston for more than 50 years. In 2019, the facility marked 50 years of production in the town, making the closure the end of a long-standing manufacturing presence in the area.
