Twin Rivers Paper celebrates 100 years of papermaking
Twin Rivers Paper Company, a leading manufacturer of specialty paper products, is celebrating its centennial, marking 100 years of papermaking, operational excellence, product innovation, and strong community engagement.
The company’s story began in 1925, when the first tons of paper were produced on two machines at its Madawaska mill in northern Maine. Today, Twin Rivers operates seven paper machines across four sites: the flagship Madawaska mill, three specialty mills in upstate New York, and an integrated pulp facility in Edmundston, New Brunswick. Renowned for its expertise in lightweight papers and its highly engineered portfolio, Twin Rivers produces around 400,000 tons of specialty grades annually, including packaging, technical, publishing, and label papers.
“This 100-year anniversary is a tribute to generations of employees who have contributed to the company’s growth and success,” said Twin Rivers Paper Chief Executive Officer Tyler Rajeski. “Our talented and dedicated workforce has been the driving force behind operational excellence, innovation, and meaningful relationships with customers and communities.”
The Madawaska mill, the company’s largest site, operates four machines producing more than 340,000 tons of specialty papers each year. These include oil- and grease-resistant packaging, coated-one-side (C1S) packaging, lightweight opaque (LWO) publishing grades, pharmaceutical papers, release liners, and thermal transfer label base papers.
The integrated Edmundston pulp mill, established in 1916 as the region’s first sulphite pulp mill, remains an essential part of operations. Pulp is delivered via pipeline across the St. John River, while a steam pipeline built in 1975 provides the Madawaska site with heat and energy. In 1997, a 45-megawatt biomass-fueled co-generation facility was commissioned at Edmundston, now supplying more than half of the site’s energy requirements.
In 2016, Twin Rivers expanded through the acquisition of Burrows Paper Corp., adding three New York mills – Mill Street, Mohawk Valley, and Lyons Falls. Burrows, whose papermaking heritage dates back to 1919 in Little Falls, NY, specialized in waxing, laminating, and extruding base papers, as well as battery pasting papers, medical grades, filtration papers, and hydroentangling substrates.
