Billerud’s long-term Science Based Targets approved – net-zero by 2050

Billerud’s long-term climate objective to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 has been formally validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This approval follows the previously endorsed near-term target set for 2030.
The SBTi has confirmed Billerud’s commitment to reach net-zero emissions by mid-century. Under this pathway, the company will reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its operations and full value chain by 90%, while the remaining residual emissions will be neutralized through an equivalent amount of carbon removals. The value chain includes every stage of the product lifecycle — from raw materials and energy use to production, transportation, product application, and end-of-life — covering both direct and indirect emissions.
“We have a strong commitment to actively contribute to the transition towards a low-carbon society. The recognition from SBTi is a big deal as it proves that we are on the right track with both our long-term and near-term targets,” says Veronica Stigsson, acting EVP Sustainability & Public Affairs at Billerud.
In 2024, Billerud’s near-term science-based targets also received SBTi approval. These targets include a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030, using 2022 as the reference year. During 2024, the company reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 337 ktons, equal to 78% of the total reductions required — placing Billerud ahead of schedule in meeting its near-term emissions objectives for internal operations.
“These achievements show that we are credible and transparent in our climate actions and sustainability work, which is also appreciated by our customers,” adds Veronica Stigsson.
The SBTi validation confirms that Billerud’s climate targets are consistent with the latest scientific recommendations and aligned with the Paris Agreement’s ambition to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Long-term emission-reduction roadmaps are already established for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across both Billerud’s European and North American operations.
