Sheeter coupling line: Restructuring initiated at Cartiera San Martino in Italy by SAEL

Cartiera San Martino in Italy reached + 30% of performance in one shot. The control and automation rebuilding started, aligning the huge investments planned by the Group for the upcoming years. Following the excellent results achieved in various drive and DCS reconstructions over the last 5 years, Cartiera San Martino has entrusted SAEL with the electrical restructuring its Pizzolato Duplex Sheeter Drive, a cutter in line with the paper coupling system, which was initiated in January 2024.

The work carried out on the line involved sectioning the existing single shaft that controlled all components of the line, including: 4 unwinders, gluing and coating line, a battery of drying cylinders with 7 cylinders, longitudinal cutting knives, introduction press for the cutter, 2 cutting blades, slow and fast conveyors, and a double palletizer.

This job involved a thorough mechanical reconstruction, eliminating the mono transmission tree and the existing individual PIVs, individually motorized after the rebuilding. The entire mechanics of the cutting system – the core of the Pizzolato system – has been replaced by 2 new low-inertia AC motors that directly control the two cutting blades.

On top to the outdated electronic components replacement, – due to the lack of efficiency caused by the unavailability of spare parts – the restructuring has ensured the safety of the entire machine, in compliance to the latest mandatory safety regulations.

Through a risk analysis conducted and controlled by Paper Mill, several control/safety devices have been implemented and managed, guaranteeing compliance with the latest applicable regulations through a PLC S7 1500 File Safe.
