Valmet has secured an order to deliver a hard nip sizing system, including the related supply system and associated services, for a board producer in Europe. The investment is intended to support the customer’s efforts to optimise raw material consumption while maintaining the strength performance of the final board products.

The start-up of the new installation is planned for spring 2027.

The hard nip sizing technology is designed to improve board strength properties while reducing the consumption of starch and fibres, supporting the production of lighter-weight grades in line with increasing industry focus on resource efficiency and sustainability.

“Hard nip sizing technology offers a robust solution for modern board machines, combining superior strength development of the board with significant starch savings. This hard nip sizing technology supports the production of lighter-weight grades, aligning with industry trends toward resource efficiency and sustainability. We look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the customer in the future,” said Klaus Kiviniemi, Product Sales Manager, Sizers and Coaters, Packaging and Paper, Valmet.

Unlike conventional sizing technologies, the hard nip sizer applies starch directly onto hard rolls through spray nozzles before pressing it through the web under very high pressure. This process helps maintain the required board strength characteristics while enabling lower starch usage and improved raw material efficiency. The delivery scope also includes the supply system together with spare parts and consumables packages.

Valmet stated that the project forms part of its broader strategy aimed at supporting customers in improving operational efficiency and advancing more sustainable production processes through advanced technologies and services.
