Valmet to start negotiations on temporary layoffs in Finland

Valmet announced that it will initiate change negotiations in Finland in accordance with the Finnish Co-operation Act, with the process scheduled to begin on May 4, 2026. The negotiations may lead to temporary layoffs of less than 90 days, potentially implemented between June and December 2026.
The planned measures concern parts of Valmet’s Packaging and Paper, and Pulp, Energy and Circularity business areas, as well as selected functions and the Global Supply unit.
The actions are intended to safeguard profitability and competitiveness by adjusting capacity to a lower-than-expected workload. This situation is partly linked to customer-driven project delays, continued weak demand in paper and board machine markets, and ongoing softness in biomaterials services. The measures are temporary in nature and are expected to generate cost savings of approximately €8 million in 2026.
The negotiations will involve around 2,400 employees across various Valmet locations in Finland, covering all employee groups within the affected organisations. The final scope, timing, and implementation of any potential actions will be determined during the negotiation process.
Valmet employs approximately 18,500 people globally, of whom around 5,900 are based in Finland.
