Papeteries Leon Martin celebrates 130 years of French excellence and commitment to a sustainable future

Papeteries Leon Martin, Europe’s only manufacturer of colored tissue papers and a proud representative of French craftsmanship and industrial expertise since 1895, celebrates its 130th anniversary this year. On this occasion, the family-owned company, now led by the fifth generation, reaffirms its commitment to responsible production and accelerates its investments to consolidate its leadership position.
Employees – both active and retired – gathered to celebrate this milestone, joined by the Sub-Prefect of the Saint-Girons District, the Vice-President of the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park, and the President of the Couserans Community of Communes. The event included guided family tours of the workshops, presentations of future projects, and the participation of M&M LUXE, a commercial partner founded by Hélène Martin and Marie-Claude Moulet for the distribution of colored and customized tissue papers.
“This day was an opportunity to emphasize that our history is written thanks to our teams, partners, and customers, who share our values of excellence and responsibility,” said Thomas Martin.
A unique heritage of quality and craftsmanship
Founded in 1895, Papeteries Leon Martin has preserved a rare artisanal heritage for over a century, specializing in the production of colored tissue papers. Made from virgin or FSC-certified recycled materials and dyed through the mass, these papers combine aesthetics, quality, and environmental respect. Customized through in-house printing, they represent French luxury in boutiques and e-commerce packaging.
The company’s distinctive market position is based on:
- A unique know-how handed down through generations
- 100% local production, ensuring full traceability and impeccable quality.
- A long-term vision supported by continuous investments to modernize production tools while preserving industrial heritage.
“Today, we are the last European manufacturer of colored tissue papers; our only competitors are in the USA and China. We prove that a family-owned SME can defend its leadership against globalization without compromising on quality!” said Thomas Martin.
Four pillars for a responsible and sustainable business
During the anniversary event, Thomas Martin, CEO and fifth-generation representative, reiterated the values that guide every decision within the company:
- Quality: An absolute standard, from raw material selection to product finishing, to deliver exceptional papers.
- Environment: A fully integrated CSR approach, with low-impact manufacturing processes and a commitment to reducing the ecological footprint.
- Safety: A pledge to provide employees with a safe and fulfilling work environment.
- Energy: An ambitious energy transition, with investments in sustainable technologies to achieve greener production.
“These pillars are not just words; they are concrete commitments. Every investment aligns with a sustainable vision, preserving our heritage while preparing for the future,” emphasized Thomas Martin.
A concrete and ambitious CSR strategy
Fully aware of its environmental and social responsibilities, the paper mill has accelerated its transition toward sustainable production since 2020. Among its main initiatives:
- Virtuous life cycle: Lightweight, low-volume papers that are 100% recyclable, designed to minimize environmental impact throughout their lifecycle.
- Carbon footprint reduction: By 2026, the installation of a biomass steam generator will reduce CO₂ emissions by 50%, marking a major step toward the company’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
- Energy autonomy: A new hydraulic turbine increases green energy self-production, enhancing resilience against electricity price fluctuations.
- Circular economy: Close collaboration with local partners for recycling collection and short-circuit product marketing.
“These investments reflect our commitment to better control costs and consumption. The new turbine will enable electricity self-sufficiency through 100% renewable and local sources!” concluded Thomas Martin.
