Feldmuehle ends papermaking in Uetersen after more than 120 years
Feldmuehle, Uetersen site, Germany.

Feldmuehle is permanently discontinuing papermaking at its Uetersen mill in Germany, marking the closure of more than 120 years of manufacturing activity at the site. The company explained that the decision stemmed from a combination of adverse market developments and insufficient support from regional authorities. These factors, according to Feldmuehle, made long-term competitiveness unattainable despite extensive internal efforts.

The announcement followed the company’s June filing for insolvency under self-administration and the subsequent restructuring programme. In its communication, Feldmuehle noted that, over recent years, significant investments had been directed toward improving sustainability, energy efficiency, process optimisation and workforce development, while new products were introduced and operating costs were systematically reduced – all within a highly competitive environment.

The company stated that a turnaround had initially appeared achievable. However, unexpected market disruptions, prolonged uncertainty surrounding industrial electricity pricing and the continued rise of administrative burdens ultimately prevented the Uetersen mill from maintaining viable operating conditions. Feldmuehle concluded that the overall framework in Germany no longer demonstrated a clear interest in retaining energy-intensive industries, making further papermaking activities economically unsustainable.

As a result, production has ceased permanently. The remaining paper already manufactured at the site will be finished, sold and shipped over the coming weeks as the facility winds down its operations.

Feldmuehle also expressed appreciation toward its workforce for their long-standing commitment and the personal efforts made during difficult years, as well as toward business partners for their consistent trust and cooperation. With this closure, the long tradition of papermaking in Uetersen comes to an end after more than a century of activity.
