25 years of PM 9: Voith and Saica set standards in paper production
Voith and Saica Group celebrated the 25th anniversary of the PM 9 production line at Saica’s mill in El Burgo de Ebro (Zaragoza, Spain). This board and packaging paper machine is regarded as a true benchmark in terms of operational efficiency, reliability, and product quality.
The PM 9 started up on 12 October 2000, marking a major step forward in the development of high-performance lightweight containerboard. Designed to produce a basis weight range of 75 to 110 gsm, with operational speeds between 975 and 1,450 m/min and an annual capacity of 350,000 tons, the line reached performance levels that were unprecedented at the time for board and packaging grades. Since then, the PM 9 has consistently surpassed its original design capacity, setting new standards for productivity and quality.
“When Saica’s board of directors decided to invest in a new facility for the production of lightweight corrugating medium grades, we knew we needed a machine that didn’t yet exist,” recalled Roberto Arnaiz, Mill Manager at Saica Paper El Burgo de Ebro. “Voith supported us from the beginning, and together we developed a facility that exceeded all our expectations.”
