ICFPA highlights the sustainability of the forest products industry

The International Council of Forest & Paper Associations (ICFPA) highlighted the importance of the forest products global industry in the development of a sustainable economy, improving the performance of social and environmental indicators and the industry’s investments in technology an innovation, during the 13th International Pulp Week, which took place from May 1 – 4.

The event counted on a talk given by the ICFPA President, Elizabeth de Carvalhaes.

At the time, the executive addressed the ongoing pursuit of the industry for innovation and sustainability, with important achievements, such as more paper recycling and fiber use optimization. “ICFPA members have increased their paper recovery rates year after year, recycling almost 60% of what they produce,” she says.

About the advances in the forest products industry

Elizabeth also highlighted the major advances in the forest products industry in order to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint, carbon inventory and remove greenhouse effect gases—to mitigate climate change. ICFPA members achieved an important reduction of 5% of their greenhouse effect gases emissions since the 2010/2011 base year and 17% since 2004/2005 (ICFPA 2015 Report).

“The forest products production activities, supported by sustainable forest planting and management are an essential aspect of the low carbon economy,” explains Elizabeth.
