Voith successfully starts up rebuilt PM 1 at Norske Skog Golbey

Full-line supplier Voith has announced the successful start-up of the rebuilt PM 1 production line at Norske Skog Golbey, France. The machine is now configured to produce 550,000 metric tons per year of recycled packaging paper, with a wire width of 9,300 mm, addressing the growing demand in the European market. Designed for a speed of 1,700 m/min, PM 1 focuses on lightweight packaging papers ranging from 70 to 135 g/m².
“We are very happy about the trusting partnership with Voith that we have been cultivating for many years now. We knew we could trust Voith to do its utmost to implement the project according to our wishes in order to achieve our goals,” said Yan Vassart, Project Director at Norske Skog Golbey. “Voith’s state-of-the-art technologies enable us to achieve our production targets while conserving resources and maintaining the highest quality.”
The rebuild included the installation of an advanced BlueLine stock preparation system and the transformation of the existing paper machine into an XcelLine machine, ensuring consistently high stock quality with optimized fiber yield and low energy consumption. The scope of supply also encompassed a Meri reject handling system with a capacity of 100 tons per day.
Numerous sections of the paper machine were upgraded with cutting-edge technologies. Sheet formation now combines a MasterJet Pro G2 two-layer headbox with a DuoFormer CBv shoe-blade former. This compact vertical dewatering section – implemented for the first time in this configuration – offers both high dewatering performance and gentle handling for enhanced paper strength. A Tandem NipcoFlex press guarantees the highest dry content and features a closed web run. In addition, the entire machine is equipped with a ropeless Prevo threading system, significantly reducing accident risks for operating personnel.
The supply package also included a new EcoHood 62 dryer hood and the modernization of ventilation systems. Voith’s digital automation portfolio – including MCS, DCS, and QCS systems, as well as the OnCare solution – has also been integrated. Going forward, Voith will support Norske Skog Golbey with a comprehensive service and materials agreement for the next five years.
“The successful completion of this project reaffirms our excellent partnership. We are pleased that Norske Skog has chosen our state-of-the-art technological solutions from the BlueLine and XcelLine portfolios,” stated Martin Schmid, Senior Vice President Projects Sales at Voith Paper. “As a full-line supplier, Voith is providing a system that delivers maximum productivity with minimal energy and resource consumption. This positions Norske Skog Golbey ideally to meet future market challenges.”
