Papiro Sarda chooses SAEL for new headbox and stock preparation automation upgrade

The collaboration between SAEL and Papiro Sarda papermill continues with the assignment of a comprehensive upgrade of the control, monitoring, and automation systems for the new headbox and stock preparation line. This project is part of a significant investment aimed at the modernization of the facility.

The intervention, planned in three implementation phases scheduled between September 2025 and early 2026, will integrate various existing components of the plant, involve the installation of new motors, and expand the already operational DCS system, with the objective of fully integrating and optimizing the entire production line.

The first phase, scheduled for September 2025, will involve upgrading the vacuum system on the flat table and installing new dewatering boxes to enhance sheet formation. During the Christmas shutdown period, the new headbox will be installed. The project will conclude in the early months of 2026 with the installation of new pulpers and pulp cleaning equipment, with the aim of significantly improving plant efficiency, energy consumption, and product quality. Additionally, the upgrade will incorporate the management of new vacuum pumps, screens, pulpers, and chests.

A key aspect of the project is the collaboration with long-established Sardinian partners such as IREM, responsible for electrical connections, and ST Macchine, supplier of the headbox. Papiro Sarda papermill will ensure system safety compliance according to current regulations.

Initial results, already validated through production cycle simulations, indicate improved runnability and more stable, intuitive plant management, also thanks to the forthcoming full integration with the company’s SAP ERP system.

“The quality of the work, SAEL’s technical expertise, and their consistent support make this partnership a reference point for the future technological advancements at our mill,” commented the technical management of Papiro Sarda Papermill.
