New PM 71 and PM 72 increase packaging paper production at Shanying Suzhou
The Voith and Shanying Suzhou Paper teams celebrate the successful start-up of the new PM 71.

Shanying Suzhou Paper has successfully started production on its new PM 71, located in Suzhou, west of Shanghai. Together with its sister machine PM 72, which recently began operation, this dual start-up represents another significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between Shanying and Voith. With the new Voith-supplied paper machine, Shanying has significantly expanded its production capacity in the premium packaging segment. The company is now better positioned to respond to market trends and strengthen its presence in the growing packaging paper market.

“We work closely with our customers and tailor our solutions to their strategic goals,” said Carlos Lin, SVP Order Execution & Operations at Voith Paper Asia. “This customization is also reflected in the design of PM 71.”

Developed for a speed of 1,300 meters per minute and a wire width of 9,300 millimeters, PM 71 produces up to 350,000 tons of lightweight yet strong corrugating medium per year, with basis weights ranging from 50 to 90 g/m². Together, PM 71 and PM 72 will be capable of producing up to 800,000 tons of corrugating medium in the 50–120 g/m² range.

The project features state-of-the-art technology from Voith’s XcelLine, including a MasterJet Pro headbox, DuoFormer D II, and DuoCentri NipcoFlex shoe press. The hybrid former concept ensures consistent paper quality and low energy consumption, even at high operating speeds. Single-tier dryer sections in both the pre-dryer and after-dryer stages improve runability, while the system is complemented by a SpeedSizer AT film press and MasterReel reeler.

Digital solutions such as DCS, QCS, and OnCare.Health further enhance operational efficiency, process stability and cost control. Many components were manufactured locally, ensuring faster delivery and installation. “The teams from Voith and Shanying worked closely and professionally together,” said Hao Mingjin, Production Manager at Shanying Suzhou.

Shortly after commissioning, PM 71 met all expectations, delivering stable production conditions with consistent cross-profiles and high-quality finished paper rolls. Both companies aim to continue setting new benchmarks for innovative and sustainable packaging paper production in the future.
