A landmark PrimeDry steel Yankee for Kartogroup España S.L.

COMINTER company Kartogroup’s steel Yankee project represents a first in the market. It was a landmark moment when ANDRITZ Novimpianti received an order from Kartogroup España S.L. to supply a PrimeDry Steel Yankee as well as air and energy systems for the Burriana mill at Castellón in Spain. With start-up scheduled for the summer of 2021, this particular steel Yankee order will be the first to be handled by ANDRITZ Novimpianti since Novimpianti became part of the ANDRITZ Group in 2018.

ANDRITZ Novimpianti will provide complete project management, commissioning and start-up for all the key components at Kartogroup. ANDRITZ Novimpianti, located in Lucca, Italy, has its roots as one of the leading suppliers of drying and ventilation equipment for all paper machine types. Over the past 35 years, Novimpianti has installed around 700 air and energy systems in more than 50 countries, a record that will only achieve new heights with ANDRITZ Novimpianti.

Luca Linari, Managing Director of ANDRITZ Novimpianti says: “The Kartogroup installation is the first steel Yankee order we have managed. We’re very proud as this order confirms that we are on the right track: from a drying specialist to a complete line provider together with the tissue experts from the ANDRITZ headquarters in Austria”. Kartogroup is a part of the COMINTER Group.
COMINTER was founded in 1978 and, among other paper-based activities, manufactures and distributes consumer and away-from-home tissue, including finished products and parent reels. Kartogroup Burriana is one of the group’s two mills in Spain, the other being Cominter Tisu located in Gipuzkoa.

ANDRITZ Novimpianti – Air and energy systems for tissue, paper and board machines

Turnkey order

The ANDRITZ Novimpianti turnkey order includes a steel Yankee with steam and condensate system for tissue machine PM2 and two dust removal systems (for PM2 and PM4) at Burriana.

The ANDRITZ PrimeDry Steel Yankee at the heart of the project will have a diameter of 14 ft. and shell length of 3 m. This high-performance drying cylinder has an evaporation rate that is 15-20 percent higher than that of cast-iron models, which results in 8-10 percent better machine performance. With diameters of up to 26 ft. available and shell lengths up to 7.4 m, ANDRITZ has quite a history when it comes to large steel Yankees and is the market and technology leader in this niche. ANDRITZ has sold more than 80 PrimeDry steel Yankees worldwide, more than 30 of which are in the large size range (>18 ft. diameter and >6 m shell length). Among these are the world’s largest steel Yankee in operation for tissue, at Carta Fabril in Brazil, and the world’s largest in operation for MG paper at ZellstoffPöls in Austria.

Steam & condensate and heat recovery

Looking deeper into the technology at Kartogroup Burriana, the PrimeDry SC steam and condensate system for PM2 regulates the steam supply, distributes the steam properly inside the Yankee, removes the condensate and then controls the way it and the blow-through steam are reused.

ANDRITZ Novimpianti’s heat recovery systems, as part of its renowned Energy-Saving Product Family, have set the standard globally for air-to-air indirect, air-to-water direct and air-to-water indirect heat recovery systems.
And being mindful that more and more tissue makers use cogeneration to produce electricity and steam, the ANDRITZ Novimpianti portfolio includes the option of integrated cogeneration – where the paper is dried with the gas from cogeneration – by utilizing exhaust heat from the turbine. As a result, conventional hood burners can be switched off, thus saving energy.

Dust control

The multi-box, ANDRITZ-developed PrimeDustEXT dust removal systems for dust control on PM2 and PM4 at Kartogroup Burriana are designed so that they do not interfere with the sheet or impede access to the machine. This is a key aspect for runnability and maintenance: The system is notably user-friendly and has low maintenance requirements. In addition, the design of the boxes prevents plugging and ensures constant suction for efficient dust removal.
So PrimeDustEXT is exceptionally effective. But along with all ANDRITZ Novimpianti’s dust control systems for tissue machines, winders and converting, safety is key. High levels of safety are achieved by eliminating fire hazards and avoiding explosions in the piping, which can be caused by a high dust concentration building up within the line.

Highest drying capacity, lowest energy consumption and environmentally friendly production

A history of cooperation, a future of innovation

Novimpianti already had a very good relationship with ANDRITZ from previous cooperation around the world.
So, when the ANDRITZ Group was looking to create a center of excellence in Lucca, at the center of Italy’s “tissue valley”, it was clear that both parties had a strong contribution to make. ANDRITZ Novimpianti brings new levels of innovation to the dry end of the tissue machine. Customers are offered a range of engineered solutions for productivity, quality and sustainability, and they have the advantages of tailor-made products backed by the power of a large organization, while the combined service operations create a formidable support network. Through ANDRITZ Novimpianti, ANDRITZ now has a center of excellence for conventional tissue in Lucca to complement its TAD hub in Canada and the exceptional pilot facility – the PrimeLine TIAC Tissue Innovation and Application Center – that ANDRITZ completed in Graz, Austria, shortly before ANDRITZ Novimpianti came into being.
This center has the facilities to test both TAD and conventional, as well as textured solutions.

Luca Linari says: “We have merged the best of ANDRITZ and Novimpianti – two market-leading technologies from one supplier. The installation at Kartogroup will be the perfect example of how, combined and optimized, our solutions really are Best Available Technology in critical areas of the tissue machine, all from one source. They provide options for new lines and retrofits that set the standard in terms of hood balance, energy and steam system efficiency, and dust control/safety throughout the plant. We look forward to the installation at Burriana, which will set new benchmarks for the industry in service and technology”.
