Green Bay Packaging enhanced operational reliability and throughput with Voith’s OnControl.Pulping Detrashing solution

Green Bay Packaging significantly improved operational reliability and detrashing throughput at its Green Bay, Wisconsin facility following the implementation of Voith’s OnControl.Pulping Detrashing solution.
In continuous operation since March 4, 2024, the smart control system automated critical steps of the detrashing process and enabled more steady-state running conditions. The system reduced the process variability typically associated with standard timed purges, resulting in greater overall stability and consistency. Additional observed benefits included cleaner rejects and fewer equipment plugging events.
Voith’s OnControl.Pulping Detrashing dynamically adjusted detrashing based on real-time data. This optimization improved fiber recovery, reduced contaminants in the accepts, and enhanced operational reliability. By automating cycle timing and adapting to varying raw material conditions, the solution supported consistent performance and process stability across shifts. The implementation also enabled Green Bay Packaging to optimize mixed paper utilization while maintaining the high quality expected by its customers.

“Our goal was to maximize our pulping efficiency,” said William Cone, Vice President of Mill Operations at Green Bay Packaging. “OnControl.Pulping Detrashing has helped us achieve that by delivering reduced variability and freeing up our team to focus on higher-value tasks. We could not see operating without it anymore.”
OnControl.Pulping Detrashing could be implemented as a stand-alone solution or integrated into Voith’s MillOne digital ecosystem. When connected to other modules, the collected information could be contextualized and linked to additional plant data, laying the groundwork for further automation in stock preparation and supporting progress toward autonomous paper mills.
