World’s widest release paper production line successfully started up
Voith and Wuzhou Special Paper have successfully started up the new PM 21 specialty paper machine at the Hanchuan site in Hubei Province, China. The PM 21 is now recognized as the world’s widest production line for release paper. Fully supplied by Voith, the machine further strengthens the technology group’s leadership in the manufacturing of high-quality specialty papers.
With a working width of 8.1 meters at the reel, the PM 21 has an annual production capacity of approximately 300,000 tons of specialty papers with basis weights ranging from 35 to 120 g/m², mainly focusing on lightweight release base papers.
Release paper is widely used in applications requiring the protection of adhesive surfaces or in separation processes. The base paper must meet strict standards of tear resistance, tensile strength, transparency, dense sheet formation, and low surface absorbency. Its characteristic non-stick surface is achieved through silicone coating.
The successful commissioning of PM 21 marks another milestone in the long-term strategic cooperation between Voith and Wuzhou Special Paper. Since 2008, the two companies have completed several joint projects and modernized a total of seven paper machines.

The PM 21 operates at speeds of up to 1,400 meters per minute. Key components such as the MasterJet Pro F headbox with ModuleJet control and the DuoFormer D II former contribute significantly to machine performance, ensuring uniform profiles, optimal moisture distribution, and precise fiber orientation. The tandem NipcoFlex shoe press, combined with a steam box, improves dryness, reduces energy consumption, and enhances sheet density — achieving an excellent balance between strength and low basis weight.
The SpeedSizer AT film press provides smooth paper surfaces, minimizes silicone consumption, and improves reverse-side printability. Meanwhile, MCB air dryers, ModulePro nozzle humidifiers, and the Sirius winding system with automatic tension control ensure high dimensional stability and prevent waviness during winding.
