International Paper to build new sustainable packaging facility in Mississippi
International Paper plans to build a new sustainable packaging facility in Rankin County, Mississippi, with construction scheduled to begin in June 2026. The investment, valued at approximately USD 225 million, will involve the development of a greenfield project on an established 80-acre site in Brandon, Mississippi. Construction is expected to start during the summer and be completed by the end of 2027.
Employees currently working at International Paper’s existing facility in Jackson, located in Richland around 10 miles from the new site, are expected to transition to the new plant once it becomes operational.
The new facility is designed to enhance production efficiency while improving reliability, product quality, and customer service across the Mid-South region. It will replace aging production infrastructure, reduce structural costs, and support growth in key markets.
“This investment supports our strategy to optimize our box plant system and focus capital where it drives the greatest return,” said Keith Townsend, Group Vice President and General Manager, North America Packaging Solutions East. “By modernizing our footprint in Mississippi, we are strengthening our service model and ability to provide customers with the highest quality sustainable packaging solutions.”
The announcement was also welcomed by Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, who highlighted the importance of continued industrial investment in the region.

International Paper’s $225 million investment in Rankin County is more proof that Mississippi’s momentum is real and growing stronger every day,” Tate Reeves said. “We’re seeing historic levels of capital investment because companies know Mississippi is a state where businesses can succeed. This project will create new opportunities for Mississippians and continue our state’s record-breaking economic development success.”
Earlier in 2026, the Memphis-based group announced a strategic plan to separate its business into two independent entities: International Paper and EMEA Packaging. The company stated that the move is intended to sharpen strategic focus and accelerate its transformation in North America.
